Top Dance Parents Questions About Ballet Attire

“What does my child wear to the first class?”

Unless the studio specifies otherwise, a simple leotard, tights and ballet slippers are ideal, but for an absolute first trial class many studios will allow leggings and a fitted t‑shirt. Check the dress code in advance so you are close enough to the rules without overbuying before you know if your child will stay.

“Leotard with tights required, or can they wear leggings?”

Many traditional ballet programs require a leotard and tights so teachers can clearly see alignment, but some more casual or preschool classes allow leggings. Always follow the studio’s written dress code and ask if leggings are okay temporarily while you sort out proper attire.

“Do they need ballet shoes right away? Which kind?”

For an ongoing class, yes— quality brand ballet shoes help with safety, technique and hygiene, though few studios might allow bare feet or socks for the very first trial. Ask the studio for their recommendations but generally beginners should wear full sole leather ballet shoes for maximum support.

“How should ballet slippers fit?”

Ballet slippers should fit snugly like a sock, with no gaping heel and only a tiny bit of growing room so the child can feel the floor and point correctly. If they bunch, curl at the toe or slip off the heel, they are too big.

“Canvas vs leather slippers?”

Canvas slippers are soft, easy to move in and usually wash better, while leather is more durable and can give extra resistance that strengthens young feet. Either is fine for most beginners, so follow your studio’s preference and your budget.

“Where do I buy tights / what color is ‘pink’?”

You can buy dance tights at your studio, dancewear shops or online, but make sure they are actual dance tights, not regular fashion tights. When studios say “pink,” they usually mean ballet pink (a soft, slightly peachy pink), so check if they specify “ballet pink,” “theatrical pink” or a brand name.

“Hair: must it be a bun? How do I do a bun on short hair?”

Many studios require hair secured off the face, and a bun is ideal for longer hair because it keeps the neck clear and looks neat. For short hair, use clips, a headband or a half‑up mini bun if possible, and ask the studio what is acceptable as long as it stays secure.

“Undergarments under a leotard—yes or no?”

Most dance leotards are designed to be worn without regular underwear because it can show, bunch or distract, especially in older classes. For kids who need coverage, look for dance‑specific undergarments in nude colors or leotards with built‑in full linings (front and back) -- especially for light colors.

“Sizing help: my kid is between sizes—what do I do?”

If your child is between sizes, it is usually safer to size up in leotards and tights for comfort and growth, while keeping shoes more exact for proper fit. Check size charts, read reviews on how items run and remember that a little growing room is okay as long as nothing is baggy or unsafe.
